Spring is here, meaning warmer weather and longer daylight hours! In the spirit of the new season, here are some fun “did you know” facts for Spring.

Spring almost always arrives on March the 20th or 21st, but sometimes on the 19th. The reason the equinoxes and solstices don’t always come on the same days, is that, the earth doesn’t circle the sun in exactly 365 days.

In Spring the earth’s axis begins to tilt towards the sun, creating longer days and warmer weather. 

Spring was originally called Lent or Lenten season, which came from the Old English lengthen, which means ‘to make longer or greater in length”. 

The warmest spring on record was in 2011, with an average temperature of 9.2’c, the coldest Spring was in 1962, with an average maximum temperature of 5.8’c and the sunniest spring was in 1948, in which a total of 558 hours were recorded.

The Denver Bank Heist in Colorado happened in the Spring of 1889.

Crime rates of burglary seem to increase, as the weather warms up through Spring and Summer.

The first Spring flowers are usually lilacs, lilies, tulips, daffodils and snowdrops.

Spring has been reported to be the most popular season to buy/sell a property so they can be settled in by Summer.

Spring cleaning can give you a better work out than a brisk walk. Depending on what you are cleaning, you can burn up to 200 calories an hour!
